We are trying to standardize our notebook style and choose either passive (wood was chosen for the arm) or whatever the other is called (we chose wood for the arm).
Is there a preferred style for BEST or for the engineering world?
Thanks
Danny

I have never heard anyone in any context advocate for passive voice.
I hear lots of preferences for active voice.
Use active voice to show you take ownership of what you are saying and doing; otherwise it comes across as “ wood was chosen for the arm (by the teacher, I didn’t think it was a good idea, so don’t blame me when it doesn’t work out) “.
Also better to follow up with why. “We chose wood for the arm based on the following decision matrix...”

Thank you. Some of the students think the passive voice sounds more "professional." They won't listen to me so it is good to have the recommendation of a real engineer. Even better, the word of "Mr. Graber" trumps everything at our school since you saved their robot last year at Texas BEST.
